10. Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3): Avian Influenza and Zoonoses Laboratory
This laboratory is a newly established in response to the preparedness to the emerging disease avian influenza but also considering handling of other high risk Zoonotic diseases. It was inaugurated on 15th of May 2009 and has a capacity to be a reference in East Africa (sub-region). Tests selected for accreditation are diagnosis of NDV and AI viruses from poultry samples.

10.2. Types of Tests
Since it is a lab with high Biosafety and biosecurity, mostly extraction of nucleotides and isolation of viruses from high mortality poultry diseases are done. In the future serological and other tests for Zoonotic diseases will be done.

10.3. Length of time elapsed to release tests
Virus isolation on embryonated chicken eggs takes 7-14 days.
